Frequently asked questions
Why does an emoji count as two characters in JavaScript?
Characters above U+FFFF are stored as two UTF-16 units (a surrogate pair), so string length counts them twice.
What is the difference between a code point and UTF-8?
A code point is the number of a character (U+00E9). UTF-8 is how that number is stored as bytes (C3 A9).
Which escapes can be decoded?
U+XXXX, \uXXXX, \u{...}, \UXXXXXXXX and HTML numeric entities.
